Couch to 5K week 5

I flew through week 5 days 1 and 2 with the greatest of ease with my new Podrunner podcast.  It was great!  Day 3 not so much.

Day one:                                  Day two:                             Day three:

*5 minute warm up                 *5 minute warm up                *5 minute warm up
*5 minute jog                         *8 minute jog                        *20 minute jog
*3 minute walk                       *5 minute walk
*5 minute jog                         *8 minute jog
    *3 minute walk
    *5 minute jog

I really thought I loved not keeping the time. On days one and two I did.  Five minute and eight minute intervals aren’t too long.  On day three, however, I didn’t quite make it.

See normally I take a bottle of water with me and drink during the walking intervals.  There was no walking interval today.  So in an effort to stay hydrated because it is so stinkin’ hot I tried to drink…and run….and breathe all at the same time.  Not a good combo.  I lost my breathing rhythm and nearly drowned myself with the water. I ended up having to walk for about a minute somewhere near the end because I had no idea how much longer I had.  For all I knew it could have been ten minutes.  If I’d realized there were only a couple of minutes left I probably could’ve hung in there to the finish. 😦

Oh, and I really need to remember to take a hand towel with me because while I don’t mind sweating so much anymore, my eyes really don’t like it.  So if you can picture this:  girl jogging, trying to drink water, in the blind with her eyes closed because they’re stinging from the sweat that’s dripping into them.  Yeah, go ahead, laugh.  I am.

I’ll be back at it next week!

      1. Good for you! So I'm not the only one who has trouble running, breathing, and drinking at the same time :)my calves are burning today. Hopefully, they'll get use to being worked!

      2. I like how those programs have specific goals for specific days. I've always done my own thing and not tried that but now you've made me want to.I love reading stuff like this. It's motivating!

      3. @DoOrDoNot,I'm prone to shin splints myself. I have to pay attention to my step and my stride. I'm pretty much past that now, though. I thought maybe I was the only one who isn't coordinated enough to do that. I don't take organized aerobics classes for that very reason. When the instructor says go right I'm the clutz going left and knocking everyone else down!@CD,It really is helpful if, like me, you have never really been athletic and you don't know the first thing about how to go about getting started with a running regimen. I knew without a doubt I couldn't just go out there and start running!

      4. Congrats on Week 5! A head sweatband may be just what you need for stingy eyes. I still haven't figured out a good way to drink while running. 🙂

      5. My 6 weeks is up. My leg feels much better. My plan is to get up early on Tuesday, before the AH goes to work and start all over. I hate to get up early and exercise is not my favorite things, so I hope I can motivate myself to get out there and do it again.

      6. @TWF, Thanks for the tip on the sweatband. I've had a hard time finding one. I guess next time I make the trek to Big Town I'll have to visit the shop that sells sports apparel. I bought one of those sports bottles today that has the nozzle on it, like drinking from a baby bottle. We'll see how that goes. :)@theagnosticswife,Yay! I'm glad you're feeling better. You can do it!

      7. Hey – congrats on week 5! I just recently made the decision that I want to run…a marathon. considering the longest I've ever run is 5 miles…I decided that the marathon will not be happening until at least next year. In the meantime, I'm planning to run a 5k at the end of this month and I'll start training in a couple weeks for a 10 miler which will be at the beginning of October…super excited and super nervous…wondering if I'll be able to stick with it. Your blog encourages me to keep going!

      8. Yay, Faith[less]! But a marathon? Maybe a half-marathon first? Not sure I could do a marathon. But that Warrior Dash that DagoodS mentioned sounds pretty interesting!
